Heading for endnotes page

I have a document with a few endnotes. The endnotes automatically get added on a separate page at the end of the document. How can I add a heading to that page (saying “Notes”)? I can’t place the cursor in front of the first endnote, so I guess one has to do it in some other way. Not sure if it matters, but the document is in .docx format. Thanks!

I have provided this answer with example files in another forum here. I have edited it slightly for greater clarity:

Endnotes are stored in-line in the XML and then moved to the end of the current section by the rendering engine. To get some text to appear at the head of the list of endnotes:

  1. Insert a page break using the Default Style page style OR using the Endnote page style.
  2. On the new page insert your text to sit above the endnote list.
  3. Highlight all text prior to the endnotes (including the text to sit above the endnote list).
  4. Insert > Section > Footnote/Endnotes tab > check Endnotes / Collect at end of section.

The page break using the Default Style page style will create a separating bar between the text and the list of endnotes, while the one using the Endnote page style will have no such mark.

Also refer my related answer on this forum here in relation to allowing content after the endnotes.

How effective this will be when using the DOCX format I am uncertain as sections are handled differently by MSO and LO. Please try it and report your finding back here.

Thank you! This worked for me. It did not work until I followed your step #3 properly by highlighting ALL TEXT PRIOR TO ENDNOTES (i.e. starting from the very beginning of the doc, through the text I want to sit above the endnotes).

This has not worked for me in repeated attempts. So far as I can tell, LibreOffice will not let me insert a page break on the endnote page, just before the first endnote. When I insert a page break on the preceding page and follow the indicated procedure, it has zero effect on the placement of the selected text, which I indend for the endnote header. It is not transferred to the endnote page, but remains just where I put it.

It sounds to me like you forgot steps 3 and 4, as indicated in my instructions. If you are using the ODT file format, it will work as described.

It is far easier: a dotted line above the endnotes appears when you situate the click just above the section. An option to edit appears there (Header(endnote) +). Clicking on the plus sign allows to enter text as header to the section. There are additional format options,
