Any numbering style employes a method to separate the number from the content. Normally its done using tab stops. In this case if a tab is inserted after 1 character or two characters, the cursor always jumps to a fixed location making the gap between them non-uniform.

You have the choice of using 'space' instead of tabs. Presuming that you are having trouble aligning you headings,

  1. Go to 'Tools > Outline Numbering' menu
  2. Open 'Position' tab
  3. Select '1-10' under level
  4. Change 'Numbering followed by' to 'Space'

If you had taken care to do all the numbering by using appropriate paragraph style, the steps above will cleanup you whole document.

For things like numbered lists, you can modify the number style to get similar results.
