LibreOffice-4-1 PPA for Ubuntu 12.04: The requested URL returned error: 404

I would like to install LibreOffice 4.1 on Ubuntu 12.04. According to official PPA web page there is: libreoffice/ppa, so:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa

When adding this repository there is WARNING that this PPA may also contains alpha, beta, release candidates etc non-stable releases, that I don’t want to install on this production computer.

In above PPA warning and also on official PPA web page: https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ppa there are other PPAs. To install LibreOffice 4.1 and ONLY install STABLE releases there should be installed from the following PPA: ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1. I added above PPA by:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1

or as I can see also works with full path:

sudo add-apt-repository https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/libreoffice-4-1

and GPG key is successfully imported.

But when I try to update repository list and install new version

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

I get error:

Is there something wrong with ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1 PPA?

Temporaly solved the problem by adding ppa:libreoffice/ppa, installing software and remove repository after. So:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:libreoffice/ppa
</pre
P.S. I see instructions on how to install LibreOffice 4.1 on Ubuntu on a lot of web sites, but can't really bealive there are suggesting non-stable PPA. In the future this may lead to several problems by non-geek users.

The only thing stable and supported is to install the LibreOffice version from the official Ubuntu repositories. E.g. 3.5.x on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (precise), 4.0 on Ubuntu 13.04 (raring) or LibreOffice 13.10 (saucy). And just to make this perfectly clear: using the TDF builds (which are not even created on Ubuntu) is even more unsupported.
See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates and https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan – they explain this very explicitly.

I agree with you completely, THE only OFFICIAL stable release is from official Ubuntu repositories… but my humble question was entirely related to libreoffice/ppa vs. libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1 PPAs. I was just asking why the SAME package was published in libreoffice/ppa and not in libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1? Currently it is not a problem, but when 4.2 BETA is released users can get from stable (=lower letters) 4.1.X to completely unstable “4.2.x BETA”.

As of 2013-08-05, thanks to the efforts of Björn Michaelsen and Rico Tzschichholz, ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1 contains packages for Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 13.10.

This can be checked by deploying the list in section “Overview of published packages” (see the image below).

Thanks I have checked and you are right. I got to say that I am little bit surprised of this “politics”:

  • ppa:libreoffice/ppa (=UNSTABLE PPA) with Ubuntu 12.04 (=stable) (I agree with Ubuntu 13.10 = UNSTABLE)
  • ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1 (=STABLEe PPA) with Ubuntu 13.10 (=UNSTABLE)

No, it doesn’t make very much sense to me, either.

I’m sure you just have to give it some time until LO 4.1 for Ubuntu 12.04 will be put in ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1.

The reason is that I (Bjoern Michaelsen) populate the ppa for the according series: LibreOffice 4.1 - Saucy, LibreOffice 4.0 - Raring, LibreOffice 3.5 Precise LTS. Rico Tzschichholz – a very awesome Ubuntu community member – does the backports to the earlier series (e.g. 4.1 on Raring). That said: All versions are in the ppa now.

Björn: Thank you for the clarification and, above all, for your hard work. Please forward our gratitude also to Rico Tzschichholz.

In my humble opinion the problem asked by me on this thread is NOT a “backporting” problem, but publishing the SAME package to multiple PPAs.As stated in my original question, libreoffice/ppa is ALSO for beta, release candidates etc, but contrary ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1 only contains STABLE LibreOffice products. For example when 4.2 version of LibreOffice beta appears (which is way unstable) using libreoffice/ppa can bring troubles to non-geek users. But if they use 4-1 ppa it wouldn’t.

Thanks a lot for adding package to libreofffice/libreoffice-4-1 ppa.

P.S. Just wondering is there some feature in this forum to mark question as answered?

When I try to update from ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1 on Ubuntu 13.04, I get option “Partially upgrade” and only some component of LO Base is offered could be updated (Java). The message is clear “Not all updates could be installed” … I am using Software Updater, and PPA was added from Softare & Sources application.

@L-user: there’s a little check-mark to the top left of every answer, under the count of votes. Place the pointer above it and the instructions should appear. If you click on it, it will change color from gray to green to indicate the answer has been marked as “correct”.

@L-user: libreoffice/ppa is not for alphas or betas – there is libreoffice/libreoffice-prereleases for that.

Hi,
sorry I am a basic Ubuntu 12.04 LTS user and totally new to this stuff.
Hence, I am a little confused. I want to “replace” my preinstalled LO 3 with LO 4.1 but I want it to be stable and I don’t want to update to unstable newer versions (but maybe to stable newer ones if possible automatically).

Is it correct to do it like this step by step: (https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/libreoffice-4-1)
In terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1

sudo apt-get update
the update is not only an update for libreoffice 4.1 but for all available ubuntu programs? And it also just gets updates and will not get newer unstable LO versions correct?

Thank you so much. I’ll have a long way ahead of me with the nice ubuntu thing.
cheers

This problem was fixed in couple of days. Adding 4.1 PPA repository will add only stable package and if update is available only stable will be updated.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-1
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

Thanks a lot
