How to refer to a header as a variable?

I don't know if I formulated my question well enough:

In a document I am working on in Writer, I am referring to various appendices, the names and numbering of which is subject to change as I am working on my document. Is it possible then, to refer to the headers of these appendices as variables (e.g. using some meta-tag?), so that the numbering and naming of the reference changes along with the development of the document?
