Is there a way that for a given (multirow, multicolumn) selection one can merge the cells by row?

@Waldyd - There are tools/icons available for merging, splitting cells. Please look at the suitable tool bar or customize your tool bar.
For customization: right click on the tool bar you want to customize > customize > add > category: Format > select the icon…
