I have a document of 10.2 mb, about 55pp ebook which is proving impossible to edit as Writer keeps freezing or crashing or relocating images and page breaks.

Am I asking Writer to do too much?

Have you changed the "Remove from Memory" to a sufficient high time. For example, if it is set to 00.00 hh.mm the images will be reloaded to memory every time you press enter, locking the screen until it is finished. You should set a reasonable value for your editing timescale..

Are you embedding the images directly into the document or linking to them? I had a similar problem to yours but my document was a single page flyer with six embedded images totalling 63Mb. The remove from memory was my particular problem. Peter

Hi Bravos, try changing the options in:
Menu/Tools/Options/LibreOffice/Memory.
- Reduce number steps to about 30, usually is enough.
- Graphics cache, use for LibreOffice: 256 (is the maximum).
- Memory per object, depends on the size of the embedded images.
- Number of object, also depends en how many are in the file.

Try deleting some pages from the end and see what happens, if the issue is solved at some point, find the page with the issue and look for the problematic object.

Version is Version: 4.1.3.2

I was using a marginally older version when I placed the question but the problem persists even after complete uninstall in case it had become corrupt and re-install with the latest version.

Even after chopping the document in to small chapters to build a Master document, Writer is till unable to Save. Changes take a long time to save and if I use the Save icon or Cntrl S then it appears to save but the menu bar greys out sometimes for minutes rather than seconds. Touching any key during this time causes the screen to white out and the only way out is to shut it down with Task Manager.

I made the changes to Memory as recommended by Mariosv (thanks for constructive response). It doesn't appear to hang so often but it is still not reliable and hangs/crashes in the same way.

Are there any other settings in /Options that I should be looking at?

Regards
