My Document has disappeared!

I use Libre Office Writer on Windows. I have been writing a very long document (over many years) and today while I was continuing with the writing the screen suddenly went blank and the document has disappeared.

I found it using start, search but when I try to open it I am either told that the file is corrupt or it opens to a blank page.

Is there any way to resolve this? I will be grateful for any advice - this is extremely upsetting as you can imagine.

That does sound upsetting. No backup copy anywhere?

I would start by checking to see what version(s?) of the file is in LibreOffice’s own backup directory. Consult the Document Foundation wiki on user profile location to see where to look for yours. If you find it, copy out the backup file to a new location and name (just to be on the safe side) and see what it contains.

The other thing to note is that if you can find the file at all, then “.odt” files are actually .ZIP files, and you might (should?) be able to get the text out of it, but that’s more a “worst case” scenario.

Do let us know how you get on.

Thank you for the reply and the advice. I thought I had a backup copy but cannot find it!

I am going to wait until my son gets home, this will be in March. He is a lot more computer literate than I am and I will show him your reply. I will certainly let you know how I get on

You might have the directory where your file was located. If you do, try to open it with WinRar App., It will show if there is any hidden backup file.

this is just a tip to recover your file from a auto back up file.
