Writer and Carrying out Math formulas

Hi all,
I am using LibreOffice 3.5.4.2, Build ID: 350m1(Build:2) on Debian Wheezy.

I would like to enter math formulas into my writer doc and have Writer calculate them out for me. I seem to remember that is possible but cannot find any information on it now. Is it possible?

For example: 3.1415*(2)^2 = x
but hopefully a little more complicated.

Any help?

You can use menu Insert > Fields > Other… and then tab ‘Variables’ and there ‘Insert Formula’. So no need for a table. But the restriction to a subset of functions and operators in Writer, which oweng has mentioned, remain.

Thanks Regina, I always forget about variables. I willl edit my answer accordingly.

There is a limited range of formula operators and functions that can be entered into cells in text tables e.g.,

= PI * (2 POW 2)
