I was almost there. Almost dumped Windows and MS Office, but LibreOffice failed to rise to the occasion. I feed the data into me Excel sheets, and all documents get scanned into pdf, and I place a hyperlink in the excel sheet, so if I want to open an invoice, statement,…etc. I just click the link.
where does LibreOffice fail here:
1- First of all, it cannot handle paths with space… why so!!! I use space in naming folders, and files, no-space rule is a thing of the past, but apparently LibreOffice still lives there.
2- The way of entering a hyperlink is not much user friendly… you need to click on insert…hyperlink…enter what you want displayed and go fishing for your file… why not efficient!?.. because in Excel, you right click and fish for the file as hyperlink, this is easier because you can then, edit, or delete the hyperlink easier, and more important, you can actually copy the hyperlink, and use it somewhere else, whether as is, or just to make life easier, you copy it to another cell, then edit it, and just rename the file (which can be just one letter different, between two files)
3- Very important: Hyperlinks are important in archiving…when you are done with one sheet for one reason or another (like may be financial year is over), you want to transfer the spreadsheet and all files to a USB, or external storage, or CD… and should you need them again, you want them to work, right? not in LibreOffice, because the links specify exact location, which obviously changes when you place it on a USB flash drive, because the file with the hyperlink will no longer be found in /home/user/ In Excel, the hyperlink is saved as /…/…/ which means the hyperlink goes looking inside the parent directory where the spreadsheet itself lives. So whether you have it on hard disk, or copied it to a USB flash, or even burned it to a CD. the hyperlinks still work.
LibrOffice still way behind MS Office, please work on these areas guys. thank you
