Losing content in Calc

I have Libre Office 3.3.4 and work through Ubuntu. I frequently lose spreadsheets after saving, although a ghost of them remains in terms of filename but no content. This seems to happen when I create a spreadsheet from a template. When trying to open I get a filter selection prompt window and once the ODF spreadsheet option is selected I get a ¨General Input/Output error¨ message. the filesize is always a meagre 1.5KB. Clearly there is no content.

I have never experienced any problems with Libre Write files. I am literate but no way am I a techie so any help in relatively plain English would be really appreciated - I use spreadsheets in my business so reliability is really quite essential

At first, i would recommend updating libreoffice to the current stable version - to rule out that the problem is caused by a bug that's eliminated already. The next point: i don't understand while you're getting a filter selection dialogue when opening a ods file using LibreOffice. ...

... Do you save in any other format than Calc? And that template - what's the format of that template? Where are the files saved? Maybe a file system privileges issue?
