Is there a way to follow a twitter hashtag on an impress slide? Powerpoint does this very easily...

No, there is no builtin way to do so. Maybe someone writes an extension in future.

While you could indert a floating frame and have the content be a twitter feed, LibreOffice's HTML-rendering isn't on-par with current browsers.

In the meantime, you can add try to (not sure whether it is possible, not using windows) your browser as OLE-Object, i.e. embed a your browser into the presentation.
