Why do Libre Office apps not load without network enabled?

Ubuntu 14.04, Libre Office Version: 4.2.6.3 Build ID: 420m0(Build:3)

while connected (via wireless to ISP) everything is fine
If my network is disabled, any Libre Office app either fails to load or hangs
once the network is enabled previous app launches are completed

I need to be able to use the office apps with network disabled

found a work-around:
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 does NOT exhibit this behavior - all other conditions being the same.

helpfull OpenOffice install links:

But… OpenOffice has its own issues… Libre Office apps load and run fine without the network enabled under the KDE desktop on Ubuntu 14.10. Looks like a Unity bug…

Just update LO using https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

You were using the Ubuntu-provided variant of LO. While the Ubuntu-provided variant is likely to have better integration it has a history of having additional bugs. It may be worthwhile trying the version from the website to determine if the problem is with the Ubuntu-packaged variant (in which case report a bug on Launchpad) or with LO in general (in which case perhaps report a bug here).

Here under Debian 7 I can operate LO as expected, regardless of network access i.e., even if I disable networking on the client. I suppose it is possible that some Gnome package that LO is integrated with is causing this issue.

Better idea to use PPA: https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

@rautamiekka, I will update my answer to be clearer.

Better, but at least on 12.04.x LTS, the PPA has §libreoffice-gnome§ and §libreoffice-gtk§ & §libreoffice-gtk3§ packages, which say they’re for GTK[3]/GNOME integration.
