Have used LibreOffice for a couple of years now for letters etc. without any problems. Just seen there is now WRITER how do they compare ? Please keep in mind you are talking to a neanderthol when it comes to technology.
When you used LibreOffice for some years to write letters, you used Writer. Writer is one of the components of LibreOffice.

My I suggest you do some reading. Maybe “Getting Started” or “Writer”. Download the documents free of charge from here: http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/
Reading this stuff, you have a good chance to advance from what you called yourself…

You might be confused because in the LO3.x version you could open a “Text Document”. Now (I don’t know from which version on) LO4.2 it is called on the left side a “Writer Document”.
If you opened a new Text Document you go to Writer-Program, now you open a Writer Document.
