In Calc, you can go Format > Column > Width to set the width of the column. The default value is .89 inches.

How do you change this default value?

The default column width can be changed by using a template.

  1. Open LibreOffice and click Spreadsheet to create a new spreadsheet.
  2. Change the column width to the value you desire by going to Format > Column > Width
  3. Go to File > Templates > Save, enter a name for your new template, click My Templates under Templates - Categories and click Ok.
  4. Go to File > Templates > Organize and double-click My Templates. Select the name of the template you just created from the list that appears. Right click on the name of your template and select Set As Default Template. Click the Close button.
  5. Close the current spreadsheet without saving changes.

Now when you create a new spreadsheet the column widths will be set to the width you specified in your template. These steps can also be used to set the default row height by substituting Format > Row > Height in step 2.
