I found that they will enable you to corrupt your data table when trying to experiment with them in an active form. I can see where they might work in a form that is used for adding new records only, but I don't know if that's what they're for or not.

If the existing docs don't provide sufficient explanation of these form controls, perhaps you could file an enhancement bug and ask for more explanation.
