How do you save a background in Writer?

Whenever I add a background to a text document, save it, and open it up again, the background has disappeared and I have to re-add the background every time I open the document. This is rather annoying. Any help to solve this would be much appreciated. By the way, I am using Libre Office on a Mac (OSX 10.8.2).
