This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >750 is welcome to improve it.
Hope this doesn't accidentally repeat.
1. Problems started when LO would hang when trying to access Open Office files.
2. It then morphed into hanging whenever I tried to do anything in LO, including create a file.
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X Mountain Lion running on it.
Any and all help appreciated.

What version of OpenOffice and LibreOffice? Your LibreOffice user profile might be corrupted. Your best bet is to try this: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User_Profile#Resetting_the_user_profile.
