Do I need to delete MS Word 2010 before I download LibreOffice?

I want Libre to work with Firefox.

I want Libre to work with Firefox.

What do you mean by that? LibreOffice and Firefox are only related to, if you set Firefox as your default browser in Windows or by LibreOffice option to be used as browser for LibreOffice Offline Help or for hyperlinks within documents.

Thank you…I mentioned Firefox because I plan to use it as my browser, so, it’s the only reason I mentioned Firefox. I wish I had said it that way and not confuse what I was speaking of. I don’t usually work offline so that is helpful to know.

Hello

No - you can have both applications installed at the same time. The only thing to keep in mind is, that only one application can be associated to a certain filename extension, allowing a double click in your file manager to open the file with the desired application. I’d recommend to associate

  • doc, docx, xls, xlsx, etc (MS Office extension) → MS Office applications (MS Word 2010)
  • odt, ott, ods, odg → LibreOffice

Hope that helps.

My recommendation: set LibreOffice as the default for all types. This will increase your system security as viruses carried over in MSO files just won’t work in LibreOffice. Use right-click → Open with… to open a file with MSO when necessary.

Excellent information here as well. I appreciate each answer since I lack experience with LibreOffice but intend to use it almost exclusively in the near future when 7 arrives January 29. I’ve been investigating free word processors and the other applications with them. Libre wins my vote! Thank you.
