Writer is losing text box content

Using LO 4.1.5.3

Created a Word document 2007/2010 XMl in LO. It has text boxes and line art.

It has deleted the text boxes including the text. This is the second time it has done this on two different documents. On the first document I was able to open the file in Word 2003. It lost all formating but kept the text boxes and text (moved all around the sheet though). The second cannot even be opened in Word 2003.

I understand that MS-Office is changing some stuff to view a 2007/2013 XML, but LO is not working even before MS-Office touches it.

Did you try to save the file using the RTF format? RTF produces mostly better results when using different applications (esp. between LibreOffice and Microsoft Office in different versions).

The OOXML file format support is only supported by Microsoft in Office 2003 through a plugin. This plugin is very old and might not be conform Microsoft’s own standard as this changed through 2007, 2010 and 2013 (the first version which support the “strict” modus).

I created the documents in LO and then the next day opened them in LO. The Text-boxes and formating is gone when I open them. The only reason I going to MS-Office, is LO is not opening/reading the file it created.

@stevenshytle - When you save a document in a format which does not support all features used in the document, you always will loose information. The native format of Writer is odt.

I don’t have experience with xml-files because I save my Writer files always in odt-format and this works perfectly fine. When I need to exchange with MSO users, I use doc-format. However I will now also try the rtf-fromat @dennisroczek recommends.

There are a few open bugs relating to “docx+text+box”. A brief examination of that list indicates a few relating to positional problems, but none that are related to data loss. If you can construct a simple test document that consistently reproduces the data loss issue, please report a bug and include the example document with clear instructions on how to reproduce the problem. If you do report a bug, please post a link to it back here in a comment. Text such as “fdo#123456” is automatically converted to a link to the bug. Thanks.
