It's the Raison d'Être of MS Office to be not compatible. This at least as soon as some features are used specifically made to ensure incompatibility. In many cases VBA acts in this sense for Excel. This may also be a reason for what the usage of VBA is encouraged so persistently. In the few cases I studied to more detail, the VBA code was just an obfuscation of banality. (To be clear: There are surely also substantial use cases.)
