DOCX is format supported by LibreOffice and OpenOffice, but not as good as DOC. Therefore, if you could ask them to send you in DOC format (MS Office 97-2000) instead of DOCX (which is new version of MS office format and not fully supported when it comes to drawings).

What you can do is install MS Office Viewer (which is free) so you can be sure that DOCX is opened correctly.
