https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/48752/how-do-i-average-rows/?answer=48756#post-id-48756The formula seems ok; probably the other column is misformatted and unable to display the number. That is, the column with the row average probably is formatted to display a date or some text value.
On LO 4.4.2.2, Calc will average on row or column no problem.
