Default font in Writer

How do I change the default font in Writer to apply to all new documents?

Hello Deb, to change the default font in Writer:

  1. choose the menu “Tools : Options…” and select the item “LibreOffice Writer > Basic Fonts (Western)”,
  2. in the field called “Default”, select your preferred font.

This worked perfect for me. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

Thank you!

Edit your Writer defauilt file template, adjusting the paragraph style Standard to the font of your choise:

File>Templates>Manage Templates or CTRL+Shift+N to show your file templates.

Open the default one with right mouse click>Edit

F11 to show the Styles and Formatting window
Right click on Default Style in the Paragraph styles display.> Edit...
Set you font on the same named tab, save by OK, save template.

I tried doing that. The default style shows Arial 12 now if I open the Default template directly. However if I just open Writer, the template that appears still shows Liberation Serif 12 even though it shows it’s the Default style. Please advise.

Create your own template with font (and other) settings that you need. Then:

either create new documents on its basis via File → New → Templates,

or make the created template the default template.

wish I had a solution. In my version of LibreOffice ( 6.4.3.2) The menu item TOOLS does not have OPTIONS at all. Now what?

Based upon your question your OS is Mac. It is in all the documentation manuals - LibreOffice>Preferences for Mac

Again, please delete and/or re-post this.

try this:
open new document
change font (and any other settings you prefer)
then hit the “save as” button (the small arrow )
scroll to “save as template”
give it a descriptive name
and at the bottom of the naming window is a check box for saving as default.
check that box

save where you want (I usually put it in my templates)
good luck

Quick observation:

  • I was not able to edit the template when I pressed CTRL+Shift+N.

Now on to the solution:

  • Most Linux distributions have “Templates” folder in the “home” directory.

  • Create a new Writer document and select the font of your choice.

  • Save that new document in the “Templates” folder. Every time you right-click and select new document, a new document will be created with the font selected by you.

Hope that helps.

  • Ctrl+Shift+N only selects a template to base your document on. To edit a template, File>Templates>Edit Template.
  • Templates directory as /home/<user>/Templates will work as a template repository known to LO only after you add it to the templates path in Tools>Options, LibreOffice>Paths
  • I don’t understand your right-click trick: what do you right-click? where? There is no New document contextual menu item under KDE Plasma desktop. In addition, I’m afraid you didn’t create a LO-template which has extension .ott, not .odt like ordinary documents. Templates are best manages through menu File>Templates.
