Desk calculator behavior

Hello,

Is there a way that you can enter numbers in Calc cells the same way you are used to do on a desk calculator?
Example : entering 123.45+55.25 in a cell does not work. You have to put a “=” in front of it, which is so unnatural that I always forget it.
Back in 1990 I worked with a program called Supercalc and the beauty was that it could auto recognize if you were entering numbers or text in a cell…
Pherhaps this could also made available for LibrOffice?

Thank you!

Yes you are right. I am also used to this from Lotus 123.

If you start the formula with “+” or “-” then CALC inserts the = by itself. I think the best solution because “=” is not on the calculator keypad.

Have to find out if this is a bug or we have to file an enhencement bug.

Addendum:

It is not a bug, it is the right behavior. NOT filing an enhancement because:

If you enter 12/3+Enter you get 12/3/2013 a date or in your case you want the result 4.

It will be difficult for the Algorithm to decide if an entry is a formula or a date or text.

@horst - thanks for the hint with “+” at the beginning. This makes Calc quite a good desktop calculator!

Thanks for the answer.

In Supercalc 12/3 gives 4.
If you wanted a date instead, then you just typed the command TODAY (present) or DATE(mm,yy,dd) in the cell.
Easy and logic, since with that TODAY/DAY command you could also made calculations.
Maybe it is still worth to reconsider the algorithm in LibreOffice.

It is always a question how many user want one or the other functinality. BTW Excel has the same behavior.

Hi @Ton1, if you’re still interested in promoting this for LO (perhaps as a mode that can be enabled?) please file an enhancement bug and provide as much information as possible. Please post a link to any bugs you file in a comment below.
