Writer keeps crashing

I just installed LibreOffice 4 but the Writer keeps crashing (I haven’t tried the other programs). Anyway, LibreOffice just closes every now and then and then when I restart it it asks if I want to recover the file that was open before the crash. I recover it but some of the text is lost.

This issue is driving me bananas, so much so that LibreOffice has become useless because it crashes several times a day. The same thing happened to 3.6 and I thought that by upgrading to 4.0 the problem would go away, but no.

What should I do? I’m on a Windows 8 laptop.

Is this document original created in LibO 4.0?

No, it was created in 3.6. But as I said, the crashed occurred in 3.6 as well.

Thank you, qubit. So far it’s just one file. The file is fairly large - a lot of text and a number of images which I generated by uising the print-screen feature and then pasting it in Paint and then back in LibreOffice. Could that be it? I will file a bug about this problem.

it could be problematic piece of libreoffice. I remember the tradition of people using FOSS will not have large complex document, they tend to split large one into several smaller ones. Now it is time to reinvent libreoffice :frowning:

So LibreOffice can’t handle large documents? That’s odd because Word 2003 could and that piece of software is 10 years old. Now I don’t know about the images - I copied them directly from Paint (after doing a print-screen) so perhaps it’s a very large file size? BMP?

Thery are different programs with different design. I personally do not use large document, while people with Microsoft Office experience will have them.

Alright, but when we are talking about large documents, what do we mean? The file that keeps crashing is 10,3 MB which doesn’t seem very large to me.

OK, I’ve split the large file into smaller files and LO is still crashing. This is becoming rediculous - it’s not just one file, it’s pretty much any file. So filing a bug doesn’t seem to be the most likely solution. Any other ideas? I’m thinking about going back to Microsoft Office…

You cannot install MS Office 2003 in win8 anyway. I cannot help, sometimes really strange thing happen on specific combination. Maybe you can try install a newer Graphic Driver and upgrade your system.

Is LO crashing on just one particular file, or is it crashing on any file you edit with it?

Crashing bugs are definitely a pain. Please file a bug about this problem. If there’s one particular file that’s crashing Writer, please include it in your bug report (please remove any personal information before upload). The QA team will be happy to help you track down this issue!

Please post a link to any bugs you file in a comment below using the format “fdo#123456”.
