After updating my LibreOffice installation to 5.4.12 whenever I try to open a LibreOffice file I get a message stating "Document file ‘xxxx.ods’ is locked for editing by yourself on a different system. This seems to be occurring only after updating to v 5.4.12. I know I can open the files in read only and save the file to a new name for editing. This can be quite cumbersome. Is there fix for this? Since I have the .msi file for the previous version can I uninstall and reinstall the earlier version. Also I read that a system restore helped someone with the same problem. Would that work?
I assume you are using Windows as you mention .msi file.
Close LibreOffice; in Windows Explorer go to the directory (folder) containing the file mentioned in the message. Set Windows Explorer to show hidden files. Locate and delete any files with names like .~lock.xxxx where xxxx is the name of a LibreOffice document file.
This should resolve the problem. Search this site using “lock” for more.

Try Windows Disk Cleanup and see if it turns something up. Are you perhaps saving to a remote device?

Sorry, using Windows 10. I understand your reply but in the File Explorer window the Hidden Items box is already checked and there are no hidden files shown.
Have you tried searching for files whose name contains lock? Search your entire C: drive (assuming that is where your files are kept)

No such lock file is found! What can I try next?
Nothing was found using Windows Disk Cleanup or CCleaner or at least nothing fixed the problem.
Does Sysinternals have the capability to kill a lock on a file? If so, how do I find it? I’ve looked at sysinernals but its a bit over my head.
Where are you actually saving the file(s)?
Files are saved to same folder on hard drive. Just tried opening a document and saving it to a different location on hard drive. It can be opened and edited from there. Moved it back to original folder and it is locked. But the file cannot be simply moved to a new location. Seems to need to be opened and “save as…” in the new location.
This (file in other folder can be opened) suggests to me some sort of Windows permissions issue ??
So far as I can tell permissions are the same. I looked at properties for the same file in either folder and comparing settings in the Security tab. Is that the right place?
Check the directory permissions as well. Not being a Windows user, Im not sure about the Security tab.
