Page styles in Writer change when opening on different PC

I’m just getting started with using styles and formatting, so bear with me…

I set up two different page styles while working on a document on my Win10 laptop. I then transferred the document to my Win10 desktop and opened them. Suddenly those page styles have been renamed Conversion 1 and Conversion 2, and several identical “Conversion #” page styles have appeared for each time I used a page break in my document. I changed the names of these styles to what I originally named them and deleted the extra Conversion page styles that I never created, saved my document, then sent it back to my laptop and opened it there. Once again,on my laptop, these page styles have been renamed Conversion # and extra page styles have been added that I never created. What might be going on here?

(This sounds to me as if you are using an alien file format.)

Did you use the native file format of LibreOffice (and generally software regarding the ODF)? For ‘Writer’ this is default an chooseable as .odt (.ott for templates) when going ‘Save As…’ a document.

Some competitors seemingly are not competitive with this respect.

If you are using LibreOffice, you should always save the original file in the international open document format. (.odt/.ott for writer .ods for spreadsheets, etc.) The problem above is usually caused by saving a document using .docx and then trying to reuse that version.

I agree with @Lupp. You are warned when saving a native .odt (.ott) file as .doc or .docx that formatting information may (that is to say will) be lost. This is especially true for styles and problems with, for example, page numbering. If you know that the recipient does not have support for the international standard open document formats, you could try using the .pdf format.
