Emojis in Writer

I’m using LibreOffice 5.4.2.2 on a Mac and I’d like to insert nice-looking Emojis in my documents.

For some, like :-1:t5:, this works pretty well. Two options:

(1) Menu bar > Input options > Show Emoji & Symbols > pick one & double-click to insert

(2) Open Emojipedia in Chrome, pick one & copy-paste.
This works, even though LibreOffice seems to get confused sometimes about the hand being brown rather than yellow.

For others, like 🤷, it works so-so: I managed to get a shrugging woman, but often LibreOffice would convert her to something like ⍰⍰♀, and she ended up yellow rather than black.

:warning: did not work properly. I want a yellow triangle, but LibreOffice insists on changing it into a less-attractive black-and-white character.

Is there a way to reliably insert emojis so they actually look like emojis?

I know I could insert my emojis as little PNGs but this sounds like a hassle: their size wouldn’t follow the font size, they easily end up in the wrong position, and they mess with my line spacing.

Thanks for any help!

Interesting question, there is quite good support for the complete unicode set of emojis in black and white using normal writer functions. Colour is still not quite there.

LibreOffice 5.3, 5.4 and now 6.0 provides direct support for Emojis by means of the EmojiOne Color font. At the moment, LibO Writer only supports fonts in directly in black and white. You have limited two colours support if you change the FONT COLOUR and HIGHLIGHT COLOUR (background colour).

You can insert emojis directly into the text using Writer in several ways. Remember they are just characters inserted from a font.

  1. Insert Special Characters. LibreOffice 6.0 has added a feature to this command to remember favourite characters to avoid having to find the same characters you repeatedly use.

  2. You can enter the character directly if you know the Unicode Value, as shown in the Insert Special Characters menu. Linux uses the ctrl / shift U+ xxxxx command, where xxxxx is the code. Windows has an equivalent feature using the code and ctrl X command. I do not believe you can do this with a Mac.

3.The autocorrect function will insert the emojis by name using the :xxxx: option. You can see the support for this by selecting the EmojiOne Color font and then ( on my Linux system, other systems are similar) TOOLS > AUTOCORRECT > AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS > Select your Language > and find your emojis. I have shown a very few English examples below. There is a huge collection to browse in the language of your choice.

Remember you need to remove the space after the first colon and before the following colon.

:house:, : house :, :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:, : smile :,, : beer :, :bathtub:, : bathtub :, :toilet:, : toilet :, :airplane: : airplane :, :phone:, : phone :.

As already mentioned, you can copy and paste emojis from other displays but I have no experience of this. Anyway, I hope you will find these notes of some interest.

 Thanks! The “EmojiOne Color” font is useful to know: at least I get a recognizable representation for every emoji, even if it’s just black and white. (Why “Color” in the font name?)

Oh, I get it. It’s not (Emoji One) Color, but Emoji (One Color).
