Character style background feature doesn't save in .docx format

I’m developing a wiki in Libre Office Writen for a postgraduate course about data-journalism and I have created my own style sheet. I’m really happy with the potential of this tool but I’m facing a little issue when I save a character style.

I achieved to save the font-family and the font-size of that style but don’t the background one. I customize it but when I close the document or send it to another person this feature disappears. I have created a style to emulate the <code></code> html look (monospace font and a gray background) so this feature really worths.

I am in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Has someone managed to solve this problem?

M$ Office has no notion of character style, so theses styles are translated into convoluted direct formattings. When you open your document again, you won’t recover character styles because they do not exist. Save in .odt. “Recent” Word versions can read Open Document Format files. They will translate character styles for their own purpose without spoiling the file (at least if they don’t modify and save it).

Note thet “recent” (since at least 2010, which is not that fresh!) Word versions can read Open Document Format files. See this page for a brief summary on compatibility and supported ODF features, though it is a bit biased.

The page does not elaborate on the conceptual differences of styles in both applications. Notably, you find no mention of style layers in LO or of the various extra styles (page, list, table).

Character style features will be translated as far as they are compatible with Word design. This translation is harmless, save for non-conversion of Word-unsupported features, as long as you don’t modify the file, i.e. you don’t update it or save it in .odt.

Of course, if you save it in other formats, don’t expect the ODF extended attributes to be present since they are not managed by Word. Welcome in the realm of [partial] compatibility
