Can I make dynamic table numbers?

I’m writing my master’s thesis. I have many different tables and graphs, etc, in my Writer document. Each table is referenced both within a paragraph of text as well as a short description below the table. I can manually number the tables, no problem. The problem comes as I continue to edit and develop this document. Tables change position and number. Is there a way I could insert a field for a dynamic number for all my tables? So if I have “see table 3” but later insert a table above it with another dynamic field, would my ‘see table 3’ automatically change to “see table 4”.

I’m sorry if this is a bit confusing. I’m trying to write this clearly. I’ll try to get some screenshots that might better convey what I am looking for. But basically, I’m looking for the dynamic nature that I can use when creating, say, page numbers or a table of contents.

Thank you for your time! Definitely let me know how I could clarify my request.

With the cursor inside the table you get a table toolbar. One of its buttons is “Insert table caption”: this button provides a menu to insert a labelled text and select a type of numbering. That number updates automatically. Later you can cross reference that numbering with Insert → Fields → More fields → Cross reference tab.

brilliant! absolutely wonderful! thank you very much =D
