Having trouble populating a table with a spread sheet

I am trying to build a data base of names and addresses. When I went to use the spread sheet to populate the table I get the message “The connection to the data source “newdb with java update” could not be established” So I downloaded a new version of Java. I understand that Windows 10 and edge do not play well with Java. So I down loaded Java using IE11. Then I down loaded JRE using current update. I restarted the computer. I deleted the old data base and generated a new one. But still get the same message. What Am I doing wrong?

Part 2
I have managed to connect my data base (new label) to my spread sheet (Christmas label.ODS). which is now called SHEET1 in the tables section. I went to generate a new document (avery labels # 8660). I move the spread sheet field names to the label from sheet 1. I then press new document. I see he 4 up labels. However no data is transferred, it only shows me the field names from SHEET1. example , , , , but no actual data. I am totally confused and I am at a loss as what to do next. I really need help. I would like to thank anyone in advance that can help me with my problem.

Thank you

Does this help? On firefox and have loaded java 32 - #2 by Ratslinger.

Hello,

It sounds like you haven’t done a mail merge. The LO Docs (found here) contain a lot of info on creating labels and mail merge.

As a summary, you have started with a spreadsheet with access to the data in a database:

Next you have started to generate labels (Avery 8660) getting to this point:

Then chose New Document:

Here is where I think you are missing the steps to fills the fields with the data. From the menu select Tools->Mail Merge Wizard... This is a simple merge so on the first screen select Next>> button on the next page select Finish button giving you this screen:

If you select Edit Individual Documents you get this screen:

Now you can see the resulting labels. There is obviously more to this as the selections show. Please refer to the documentation for more info. This is just to get you started.

If this answers your question please click on the :heavy_check_mark: (upper left area of answer).

Also there is the Books, guides and more. It is in the upper right column under Resources (main questions page),which among many other things, contains this: Printing Address Labels. Even without following my extended instructions, your labels should work when you selected Print which would bring up the Mail Merge dialog.

Thank you , Thank you, Thank you. You not only found the error I was having, and corrected it, the OL link you gave me about labels was really great and very informative. Thank you very much.

‘Edit individual Document’ is the magic information that is -missing-
from the LO docs, like:
https://help.libreoffice.org/6.3/en-US/text/shared/guide/labels_database.html

The label-printing process is totally counter-intuitive.
Being an experienced consultant, I now spend 3 hours on this.
LO needs to streamline that badly.
