I click file, labels, new document. Just gives me a file that I already have

It is not clear as to exactly what problem your are having. A question should include the specific problem, steps to reproduce the problem and expected results. It is usually best to also include which specific version of LO you are using and not say ‘Current’. OS may be helpful.
