Trying to set Line width in Writer

IN Writer, I ask to Insert /Shape/Line/Line. The default width is 0. I can draw a line, and then set its width to say, 1cm by leaving it selected then upping the width. But then when I try to draw another line, I have to go through the edit process as the line is again 0 width.

Is there any way to make the width stick between line and next line? I can see it reverting if I actually ask to Insert /Shape/Line/Line again, but not between lines in the same draw.

Thanks for any help.

Nick

Named styles are only implemented for ‘Draw’ and ‘Impress’ presently. If you create your drawings (shapes, groups of shapes) in ‘Draw’ and move them to your ‘Writer’ documents later, you can define a template for ‘Draw’ containing the styles you want.

A different line width for the ‘Object without fill’ style would apply then to any object of the class you create. You can also create hierarchies of styles and apply one by doubleclick to the selected shapes.

You may also want to study the enhancement request tdf#89369.

Editing with respect to the comment by the OQ below:
Presently there is no way to do what you want as no styles are implemented for shapes in ‘Writer’. There also is no document property like “default line-width for shapes without a fill” in ‘Writer’ (and it would be against proven principles if existing).
The only workaround I can think of is to make a document template containing prepared shapes having set the basic properties you want to set again and again. You then can create new shapes as copies from those examples and adjust the additional properties as needed. This would replace insofar the creation of shapes by using the respective tool from the ‘Drawing’ toolbar.

Edit 2:
A workaround probably superior under realistic conditions is given by @PYS in this comment on the above mentioned bug/enhancement.
I want to add that the properties to apply by the already chosen but not yet used tool for drawing a shape can also be changed without the second toolbar ‘Drawing Objects Properties’: Before the first usage of the chosen tool rightclick somewhere in the working area and the respective context menu will open, allowing you to make changes that will persist for the session if not changed again.

Edit 3 reinforcing what was added by “Edit 2”:
This proceeding is actually usable without any relevant complications.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I am now totally confused. Why do line thicknesses have anything to do with “named styles”?..or hierarchies. I just want to have a line of a given thickness. There is a menu box to select a thickness, but it will not stick. Line colour also was behaving very strangely.
Nick

The “given thickness” is taken from the default for the kind of shapes as defined for Writer.
The usage of styles is a basic concept of LibO / AOO /StarOffice from the very beginning. You are using styles all the time whether you are in ‘Writer’ or in another module and whether you know it or not.
The problem isn’t that there are styles for LibO objects, but that there are none exceptionally for shapes in ‘Writer’ and in ‘Calc’. See tdf#89359 again.

Geeze! Objects and classes…I am back into C++ and other programming…* I want to write documents.

Is this really IT? An OpenSource Office that is lost in Geek?

Next feature “change default area colour for ellipses”? “Change default line-end-arrow width”? …? I called objects objects because they were objects (in a sense very close to everyday language where the term comes from), not because I want to talk about programming paradigms. For tasks of the kind styles are an appropriate means. The deficiency concerned here is that shape styles are not implemented in ‘Writer’.
Regretting to have wasted time with a user not wanting to understand anything.

I “do not want to understand anything” that has nothing to do with WRITING A DOCUMENT. That is what WRITER is about. If its menus fail to deliver, gobbledegook replies will not help. I think that if there is a basic concept that came right from the beginning, that leaves the programme back in geek land and not in the land of USERS who want to use the programme, it could severely limit the programme’s success.

I do accept that there is something that needs to be implemented in Writer. It should be, or the programme is faulty.
