Crashes when saving in rtf, txt

I use Libre Office (on Win XP, if anyone cares), to write fiction. So we’re talking text files that can get pretty big.

The problem I’m having is that time and time again (though not EVERY time), when I attempt to save files to rtf or txt formats (because I’d rather not end up, as I did in open office, with whole documents converted into nothing but pages of ‘####’ signs and not a darn thing I can do about it), Libre Office crashes. It has done this repeatedly now, even after un-installing and re-installing the product. This is happening quite often when I attempt to save my files into one of these formats (probably rtf specifically, because it’s the first format I tend to save to, of the two).

Is this a known glitch? Or is there a way to fix it?

Hi @Youka,

What version of LO are you using? If you’re not running a 4.x.x build yet, please grab the latest release and see if your problems go away.

Okay, I looked through the bug tracker for bugs that matched “rtf” or “crash”, and there are number of those! For just “rtf crash” I got a couple:

  • fdo#55665 - FILESAVE CRASH RTF: Cannot save particular file as RTF or .DOC
  • fdo#51916 - FILEOPEN: Crash when opening particular RTF document with TABLES

The 2nd one sounds like a bug on File-Open, so perhaps not your issue. The 1st one doesn’t look like it’s been tested on any 4.x builds, so it might no longer be outstanding.

If you do decide to file a bug, please post a link to it in a comment below using the format “fdo#123456”.

Thanks!

I am already using 4.0. (And don’t know a thing about filing bug reports.) If the software doesn’t work properly, and I can’t find a way to fix it, then all I can do is try to find another program to use that doesn’t have this problem.

You can report a bug by using menu option Help | Send Feedback from within LibreOffice.

Well, maybe I can try that. The error is persisting, too. I uninstalled libre office and re-installed it, again, but once again, the first time I try to save to rtf, it crashes. Only after I recover the file, and try again, does it seem I can save to rtf. Maybe this has something to do with exceptionally large text files? I would imagine if people with smaller files were having the same problem, everyone would probably be more aware of it, by now.

@Youka, Hmm…sounds like there could be a bug lurking here. If you need any additional help filing that bug report, please feel free to drop by the #libreoffice-qa IRC channel.

Thanks!

@Youka - an additional hint could be to use a master document and have each chapter in a separate file. This reduces the chance that all gets lost.
