Almost every day I see a question in AskLibO which is first answered by the questions, which OS and/or which LibO version is used.

What about adding one additional step between clicking "Ask Your Question" and the opening of the window to write the question, where this additional steps requires selection of OS and LibO version?

Opinions are welcome!

Very good idea. Also which part Writer, Calc.. is involved. Sometimes it is not clear.

@horst - yes of course! Thanks for pointing this out!!!

I hope to get some more answers to put weight behind an enhancement request.

maybe use of drop-down list for operating system and libreoffice - but you need to know that some users just don't know how to get this info, so some "unknown" option should also be there (or help how to get this info)...

@froz - Thanks for your very valid comment.

Hi @ROSt52,

I've had a number of conversations with Joel Madero and others on the QA team about the best way for the Ask site and Bugzilla to interact (and more generally speaking, for us on the Ask site and the QA Team to interact). I'd really like better integration so that we could click a button and turn a Question into a Bug Report (and potentially collect version information as a part of that process), but I'm not sure when we'll have the tech resources to make that happen.

We could try to add drop-down menus (or something similar), but I'm not sure that we're going to be able to make changes to the site code soon. The IT team is still VERY busy, and we're still waiting for updates on site/security upgrades to the Askbot software. What we could do is change some of the text that is displayed when the user is entering a question.

What do you think about asking a user to tag his question with OS and LO version #'s? We could provide a list of the most common OSes, and a short blurb on how to look up your LO version number.

I am not a fan of turning questions to bugs, because questions on forum have all sort of discussion and bug report should be as clean as possible to minimize the time needed by QA team to diagnose the problem. But there is something that I miss very much - userid/password integration between bug tracking system and this ask-forum. So each user has to double register etc...

@froz -

  1. I agree it could be difficult to turn question threads directly into bugs, but what if users could click a button & have a new bug report populated with the text of their question? Users would still have to conform to the rules of the bugtracker, but it would simplify the step.

@froz -

  1. Re: Single sign-on, this is something I've campaigned for heavily. We'd need to first locally-host bugzilla, which is apparently not an option right now. I've not given up yet, but it may take some time.

Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for helping to answer q's. It's really great to see more and more people getting involved with the Ask site!

@froz - Thanks for your comments. The more comments will be written, the more information is available for the AskLibO-QA team to get the best enhancement possible.

Most of my questions turned out to be feature requests and bugs.

@ROSt52 (et al) -- I've posted a couple of emails to the Website mailing list , including the suggestion to add to the Ask-a-new-question page and some notes on new/updated wiki pages about the Ask site.

Please go sign-up for the list and give some feedback.

I am aware that the request I posted could be difficult to be realized. Limitations I can consider are: dev manpower, technical constrains etc.

And there could be better ideas.

Thus, the idea of tagging OSes and give a hint where to look up the LibO version is fine for me as well. Especially if there are activities going on for a better integration in general. Go ahead with what is considered the best. I just put a proposal forward which I saw.

By the way a button to turn a question into a bug report is a great idea. I assume that this can also be made for an enhancement request.

I am looking forward to the new feature and keep fingers crossed for dev manpower.

@ROSt52 -- Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably toss out some proposals on the website mailing list about OS/LO version # info, see if anyone has any objections, and then try to move forward with implementing the change.

@quibit - Tossing some proposals to get feedback is a good idea. Could you possibly inform on the link in AskLibO as well? I will give a feedback.

@ROSt52, @horst, @froz, @jiero (and others like @manj_k :-)

On a related note...what do you think about a separate mailing list for the Ask site? I believe that some of you may not be on the infrastructure mailing list, but would you consider joining a list that was just about the Ask site? It would be great to get input from all of you in these types of conversations.

(I'm going to email the infrastructure list, too, but thought I would ping you guys first :-)

@qubit - go ahead, I will have a look at the mails of the infrastructure list
