i want to create a crosshatch pattern using Draw along the side of a page

Not certain what is meant by ‘…along the side of a page’.
You can place hatch patterns on a page (Format->Page Properties... from menu - hatch on background tab) or a shape such as a rectangle (right click & select Area - hatch on Area tab`).
You can create different effects with these:

This last one uses page background. It appears there may be a bug with it since it won’t save angles or multiple lines.
Upper left is a rectangle over entire page with a hatch & then a white rectangle (smaller in size) over that. Upper right is simply a rectangle on right side of page.
