Why are some menu items on Impress greyed out on 4.0.2?

I am using Version 4.0.2.1 (Build ID: 400m0(Build:1)) under Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. This is first time since upgrading to 4.0 that I used Impress. Many of my menu items that are very important to me are greyed out. For example, these include Edit Undo Redo Cut Copy and Format Position and Size. Why have these very important functions been greyed-out. How do I get them reinstated? Why does LibreOffice Impress now have reduced functionality?

This problem now occurs with Writer. Problem occurs when editing old file as well as when starting new files. File permissions are correct.

1. Undo and redo make sense only
   when you have actually changed
   anything. Type a word and look
   again.

2. Cut and Copy are usable only when
   you have selected something.

3. Format position and size are only
   usable when you have some elements
   selected, to which these changes can
   be applied.

Someone must have agreed with me. Problem mentioned above does not occur on Version 4.2.4.2 (Build ID: 420m Build:2)
