I want to create a people directory and real estate database involving photos and galleries. I have been looking all over and can not find any directions. Anyone know of some tutorials?

There is much to comprehend when first starting with databases. A good place to start is the LO documentation found here → Documentation/Publications. You will find the ‘Getting Started’ guides, all the Base documents and lower on the page more how-to’s. There are many samples in the documents.
As for images in a database here are just a couple of posts on that:
