How can I change the number of files in recent files list

I used to be ab;e too see a list of the last 10 most recent files opened. Now it is only one.
I know its got to be a simple thing to set, but I can’t find it.

Duplicate of another question, with the best answer being to change PickListSize in the Expert Configuration. No addons needed.

'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced'
choose 'Open Expert Configuration'
search 'picklist'
select 'History PickListSize'
choose 'Edit'
enter Desired Value

Tell me if you found a shorter way.

It’s Tools → Options → LibreOffice → Advanced from this original question.

The PickList / Recent files list can also be managed with the “History Master” add-on which you can find here.

Hi,

This question comes back periodically as LibreOffice evolves. It took a lot of digging to find this answer as most answers no longer apply in LO6 and the questions have been closed not allowing updates.

Answers in LO blogs referring to OpenOffice History Manager add-on/plugin, and similar, are obsolete and not applicable in LO6.

Also solutions prior to LO6, should be taken with a grain of salt. From what I’ve found the simplest and most direct way to increase the size of the Recent Files List in LO6 is:

  1. With an a document opened or not, go to the Tools menu item and choose Options

  2. In the Options menu is a tree with LibreOffice, Load/Save, Language Settings, etc. Choose LibreOffice
and select the Advanced menu item.

  3. In the right panel of the Options window will appear Java Options, and in the bottom right a button to press called Open Expert Configuration

  4. a new window will open and at the top is a search bar. Enter picklistsize and press enter. The item History is of type long integer with a default value of 10 or 25. I’ve increased mine to 99 with no issues and now to 333.

If ever I find I have too many items in my list I can just clear it. When GB and TB of space are so affordable, for typical file sizes the cost of space is completely insignificant.

Cheers

I’m sorry but that is simply not true.

History Master has worked in LO since version 4.x and continues to work up to version 7.0.6.2 (at least).

It presents users with a much friendlier (and more functional) interface than having to delve into Expert Configuration.

Thus far, there is nothing “obsolete” about it.

Hi BigRal,

Great ! I stand corrected, all the better !

But look, when you go to the LO6 extensions at LO6 Extensions: search on “history”
as can be seen in this screen shot:
LO6 - history - extensions

. . . and searches of LO extensions with “historymaster” “history master” produced no results. So naturally I assumed incorrectly it was no longer available.

Is there a repo that would contain this extension that is not part of the LO official extensions ?

Cheers,

xian

Is there a repo that would contain this extension

I’m not aware of one.

Manually changing the History picklist size appears to work as intended.
Is there a way to change the size of the Images in the Recent Documents window ?
TIA’s

I’m using LibreOffice 7.5.8.2 on macOS 14.1.1.
You state :
" With an a document opened or not, go to the Tools menu item and choose Options"

  1. On macOS 14.1.1 the Tools menu is not available unless LibreOffice has opened a document.
  2. The LibreOffice [7.5.8.2] Tools menu does not have an entry Options

I’d be grateful if you could specify the version of LibreOffice and the operating system to which your solution applies. A solution for LibreOffice 7.5.8.2 on macOS 14.1.1 would be appreciated…

For MacOS, LibreOffice | Preferences is the equivalent of Tools | Options on other operating systems.

Many thanks to robleyd for the suggestion that on macOS I should use “LibreOffice | Preferences” rather than “Tools | Options” which was suggested. (Apperenlty for ‘other operating systems’.)
It worked, to an extent.
I got as far as xian’s point 4 and set the picklistsize to 99.
But it has no effect.
When I right-click on LibreOffice in my Dock it still shows only the last 10 documents that I’ve opened.

I have to repeat my question :
How can I change the number of files in the recent files list in LibreOffice 7.5.8.2 on macOS 14.1.1 ?

You will need to open more documents until you have populated the recent documents list with 99 files.

I’ve opened more than a dozen different files but still only the last 10 are displayed.

What do you see if you go to File | Recent Documents? I’m not a Mac user but I suspect that the Dock you refer to is part of MacOS and may not be affected by LibreOffice settings. Maybe How to Show More or Fewer Recent Applications in Your Mac's Dock - MacRumors might be relevant?

Many thanks to robleyd who asked :
“What do you see if you go to File | Recent Documents?”
I assume that s/he refers to the “File | Recent Documents” menu that is available when viewing a document in LibreOffice. In that menu, yes, I can see many (more than 10) documents. So that’s OK.

The Dock I referred to is indeed part of MacOS. I believe that MS Windows has something similar. It is on the desktop (i think by default a the bottom of the sceen). It contains icons for frequently used applcations.

Prior to installing LibreOffice, I could right-click on the OpenOffIce icon in the dock and would see a list of the most recently opened documents.
After installing LibreOffice :
a) right-click on the OpenOffIce icon in the dock fails to show any recently opened documents.
b) right-click on the LibreOffice icon in the dock shows just the last 10 most recently opened documents,

What do I need to do to adjust the length of the list of previously opened documents that is displayed when I right-click on the LibreOffice icon in the dock ?

The list of recent documents in the Mac dock depends on settings in the operating system.
Try this Apple link, Open recently used items on Mac - Apple Support (NZ)

EarnestAI wrote about the “list of recent documents in the Mac dock”
and refered to an Apple link about the list of recent documents available from the Apple Menu.
[If EarmestAI is AI, it just goes to show how useless AI is.]

I’m asking about the length of the list of recent documents for each application which is in the dock. That list is (or should be) shown when the user right-clicks on the application’s icon in the dock. I’m particularily interested in recent documents onpend by OpenOffice and LibreOffice.
