I cannot insert shapes. I can see them in the insert menu and select them but cannot get them to actually insert in a document

After selecting the tool in the toolbar (the cursor changes) you have to draw the shape by keeping the left click of the mouse pressed and moving the mouse. Release when the shape is drawn.
