How do I separate endnotes by "part"?

I am writing a book and the book is separated into 5 parts, each further separated by chapters.

PART ONE

• chapter 1.1
• chapter 1.2

PART TWO

• chapter 2.1
• chapter 2.2
• chapter 2.3

…and so on

My endnotes are all at the end of the document, which I want. But I want them to restart numbering in each PART. My endnotes are used for citations of references and there are hundreds of them. I don’t want 3-digit endnotes.

Is there a way to create a header before each new section of endnotes on the endnotes page? And also put a title on my endnotes page?

You need to include each part on a new section (select content → Insert → Section) and set that section (Footnotes/Endnotes tab) to gather end-notes at its end. You can even select to restart numbering and many other options.

That puts the endnotes at the end of each section instead of at the end of the document.

Sorry, I misread your original question. I know of no simple way to obtain what you want. Maybe you can “fake” the end notes with numbered lists on the end of the document and then cross referencing the items from the numbered list, but it’s a lot of extra work.

To the best of my knowledge, you can’t.

Your main point is to number your notes per “part”. Standard options in Tools>Footnotes & Endnotes are per document for End of document location and per document/chapter/page for End of page location.

There is an alternate possibility, though not fully compliant with your specification: make your parts live in a section (see Insert>Section). Sections behave as subdocuments and your notes can be put at the end of the section with a section-private numbering. The inconvenient is all notes relative your a “part” are grouped at the end of this part, meaning you must leaf through to find the notes instead of flipping directly the end of the book.
