Maybe you pressed the Ins key by accident? Look at the status bar on the bottom of Writer’s window, just to the right of the box indicating the text language: if there is nothing there, it’s normal insertion mode, but if you see “overwrite” or something similar, you’ve found the problem (clicking there also toggle the overwrite mode).
