Writer: search closed documents for text

Ideally there is a unix utility but a gui will do.

I have a couple hundred writer documents to search. Opening them all at once will be problematic. Searching them one by one is out of the question.

You didn’t mention the distro you’re using, nor which desktop. Have you looked at Nepomuk or Baloo for KDE (though I never had a try), GNOME Storage for GNOME or Beagle and Strigi supposed to be cross-platform?

Standard filemanager in Ubuntu handles searches-in-files easily. We really need to know your distro, though, as ajlittoz says. Also, see this useful Q&A on AskUbuntu. Of course, if you just want to identify the files, then grep should do.

I forgot to mention KFind the standard GUI file search utility under KDE desktop which has a Contents tab to search inside files, but I’m afraid it can’t do for .odt because these files are seen as binary

Would this be of any help?

Very interesting. Thanks! Meanwhile I found DocFetcher - Fast Document Search which works well enough, but your link actually offers more possibility.
