"Press Quality" for Export as PDF in Writer

I have an ODT document that I am supposed to turn in as a PDF “saved with the Press Quality setting”. There is nothing in the Export as PDF dialog that looks like Press Quality. I tried reading about it, and I have a suspicion this refers to image compression and color schemes. I have no images in the document and no colors — it’s just a usual black-and-white text.

What to do? Does the default output of Export as PDF qualify as Press Quality in this case? If no, can I somehow ensure it is Press Quality?

Thank you!

Look at this:

and ask your printery which version is needed.

The English version of Wikipedia does not have this section, the German does, but in any case the question is not about various PDF versions, it’s about compression. Never mind though, as the “printery” said that for a PDF with no images this did not matter, the text would be rendered at the maximal quality anyway. Unless someone is willing to share more info about Press Quality and what it means for LibreOffice specifically, this question can be closed.

I hope someone will.

Siberian, if your document only uses type in black, you can just export/save it to a pdf-file. Type will be rendered from the vector font information and some positioning code. It is wise to test a file with your printer to avoid typeface problems. Just give your printer information about the used typeface(s) and (s)he will be able to detect errors if there are some.

As soon as you use shades of black, other colors, images overlapping images, vector and bitmap images for them selves or in combination, you are better of with another solution. If this way of lay-out happens more often, you are better off with dedicated lay-out software. Here Scribus is a full functional open source and free option, or chose a commercial application that is known at your printer. So you can use their expertise to make the right setup for high quality (offset) printing.

If your document is only text it will be in effect “press quality.”

Adobe applications have output settings which you can customize.
One of the default settings is Press Quality.

From Adobe Help:

Press Quality

Creates PDF files for high-quality
print production (for example, for
digital printing or for color
separations to an imagesetter or
platesetter). However, it does not
create files that are PDF/X compliant.
In this case, the quality of the
content is the highest consideration.
The objective is to maintain all the
information in a PDF file that a
commercial printer or print service
provider requires to print the
document correctly. This set of
options uses PDF 1.4, converts colors
to CMYK, and downsamples color and
grayscale images to 300 ppi and
monochrome images to 1200 ppi. It
embeds subsets of all fonts and
preserves transparency (for file types
capable of transparency). These PDF
files can be opened in Acrobat 5.0 and
Acrobat Reader 5.0 and later. Note:
Before creating a PDF file to send to
a commercial printer or print service
provider, find out what output
resolution and other settings are
required. Or, ask for a .joboptions
file with the recommended settings.
You sometimes must customize the Adobe
PDF settings for a particular provider
and then provide a .joboptions file of
your own.

Since you have no color or images this is mostly irrelevant.
Export to PDF and you will have “press quality.”
