The spell check is not working, as I have no language modules installed.
I need to know where I can get them, and how to install them.

Hmm… don’t know what is included into the alpha release; can only suggest you to update to current beta 2. (And I don’t know what is in the beta package either; so no idea if that would help solving your issue.)
The alpha version contains some of the language packs and is out of date. You should use the Beta version. However you should remove the alpha version first. You need to download both the language and help packs for the specific language. I have EN-GB linux installed.
If in doubt, I should use 6.0.5 unless you have a specific need for 6.1
