Can Header on different pages be different? Can footnotes start anew from 1 in several chapters within a single file?

I’ve got a 250-page book containing 37 chapters, which is ready to be formatted for print publishing.

1. Can this be done treating the 250-page file as one file, and yet having the program recognize the separate chapters within the file such that the footnotes in each chapter are numbered anew starting with ‘1’.

2. Again treating the 250-page file as one file, can the header at the top of each page show the chapter name on the left hand pages and the book name on the right hand pages. This would of course require a different chapter name on the left hand pages for each chapter.

1. Yes. The footnote numbering can be set to start over for each chapter.
   See Tools > Footnotes and Endnotes > Footnotes tab > Counting
   Select Per chapter

2. Yes, you can have different headers on the even/odd pages.
   And you can insert the document name and/or the chapter name.

I have spent five hours today reading through the WG54, and learned many things. I did find out how to set the headers to show different things on the right and left pages. But I could not find how to set the header to show a chapter name only for as many pages as the chapter continues. When the next chapter begins, a different chapter name should appear in the header. Is that done by having a different page style for each chapter?

In addition to @LibreTraining great answer, be aware that Writer defines “Chapter” as a Level 1 heading.

If your book is set to have “Parts” on Level 1 and “Chapters” on Level 2 you’ll need to work a bit more, putting each chapter inside its own section (Insert → Section) and setting the “collect at the end of text” option for footnotes, marking “restart numbering” too. BTW, this option is perhaps one of the greatest candidates to the award for “worst named of all useful options”
