Can't get "sum" function to work

I’m trying to do a simple spreadsheet of my monthly bills, I need one column added up. My headers look like this

Date Company Amt Paid Date paid

When I go into the Amt Paid column and do a sum function (cells c3:c15), it copies the “Date” information and paste it into the amt paid column.

Other times I get an “error 549” message, or cell c3 will have ###, or some other problem that I don’t remember off the top of my head.

What am I doing wrong?

Put the cursor in c16. Click on the “Sum” icon. Press “Enter”.

Errors on other times should not appear on this question. Please ask a separate question for each error or mistake and explain it well (what, when, why?).

You might also want to right click the cell with the letter (e.g., A, B, C) at the top of your “Amt Paid” column (the blue C in ebot’s video above), click Format Cells, and select “Currency” from the Category list. You could do the same with your “Date” columns. This might clear up some of the errors you’re encountering…

formt date column as currency ??? do ‘similar’ and format as your preferred date format, be aware that format changes are not instantly applied but come into effect on the next input to the cell,

I followed both ebot’s and knottedknickers instructions and now it’s working. All though I know (or think I know) that I had tried all of that before. But, maybe not at the same time.

Thanks Guys your the best.

NOT WORKING- CELLS D2,E2,F2,G2 HAVE DOLLAR AMOUNTS FORMTTED AS CURRENCY= CELL H2 HAS FORMULA =SUM(D2:G2) AND I GET 0 RETURN OR EVEN #NAME?
I TRIED RECACULATE AND ALSO AUTOCALCULATE – STILL NO SUM

I CAN ENTER A FORMULA =SUM(D2+E2+F2+G2) ZND GET CORECT AMOUNT

AFRAID TO INVEST MUCH TIME IN THIS IF A SIMPLE SUM FUNCTION IS SO DIFFICULT TO MAKE WORK CORRECTLY!
