Cross references display the wrong number

I have a LO writer document that started displaying the table and figure cross reference incorrectly (they show the wrong number). The table and figure captions are correctly and sequentially numbered, but the in-text references to these items are wrong. For example, I add a cross reference to Figure 2, but it displays 7 instead of 2, or I add a reference to Figure 13, and it instead shows 25 (and I don’t even have 25 figures). When I double click on the references, it takes me to the correct figure or table(the internal link is correct), it just SHOWS the wrong number, which would lead to a lot of confusion for a reader. How can I fix these very frustrating behavior?

Probably a stupid question, but are you sure that your cross references really reference Numbering (bottom of the list) and not Page (top)?

Not a stupid question at all - that was exactly what was happening! I just totally forgot about that possibility, but it is so obvious now.

See the comment above. The simple solution is to specify reference to the Figure/Table number, not page.
