Oracle to start charging for Java

I am exploring using LibreOffice Base for my nonprofit organization in place of Microsoft Access and want to alert you to this:

Oracle Java SE 8 Release Updates

Public updates for Oracle Java SE 8 will remain available for individual, personal use through at least the end of 2020.

Public updates for Oracle Java SE 8 released after January 2019 will not be available for business, commercial or production use without a commercial license.

[…]

this makes me nervous about whether I will be able to get LO to work past 2020. Is it likely that LO Base will still require Java runtime environment past 2020?

Hello,

Please see this similar question → Oracle changing java license

Also haven’t you seen the push toward Firebird replacing HSQLDB? Been using it for months.

Currently you can use many other DB’s without Java installed.

Also your concern seems to be about Java 8. I’m using Java 10 on Mint & just directed another to use Java 11 on Mac OS without problem.

Edit:

Forgot about OpenJDK. That works for me also.
