How do I auto calculate?

I need to auto calculate a column of figures. I tried to use “auto calculate” under tools and was unsuccessful.

Put a checkmark in the menu Data>Calculate>Calculate automatically.

You can manually generate a calculation with F9.

Or not recalculated after changes in related cells?
Updates of external data not recognised?

My columns are never calculated. When I first installed the check register, it worked great but all of a sudden it just stopped.
